Artist Creates “The Great Wall of Vagina”
By
UK-based sculptor Jamie McCartney made what he calls “The Great Wall of Vagina”, exhibited at the Brighton Festival Fringe. The entire sculpture consists of 400 plaster casts of vaginas with whom the artist personally had sex with. If that doesn’t spell “classy,” I don’t know what does.
The artist explains:
Vulvas and labia are as different as a faces and many people, particularly women, don’t seem to know that… showing the variety of shapes is endlessly fascinating, empowering and comforting. For many women their genitals are a source of shame rather than pride and this piece seeks to redress the balance, showing that everyone is different and everyone is normal.
He expects us to believe that the wall is a celebration of the vagina. Celebratory though it may be, it looks like little more than a monument to the artist’s sexual conquests.

I can appreciate the Art of this exhibition. What I cannot appreciate is the Artist’s need to tell us that he had sex with his models. HIGHLY unprofessional!

He has NOT had sex with his models. I’ve watched several videos on this art piece and many of the women that come to get themselves cast are married. Where did you get the idea that he was having sex with these women?

I guess it goes to show that if you’ve seen one, you HAVEN’T seen ‘em all! Personally, I am somewhat grossed out…but when they do the great wall of peni (is that the plural of penis??), I’m there! ;)

I agree that the artist never stated he slept with his models. That is ridiculous. I love this piece bc he has brought out into the open, in a tasteful way, something we keep under wraps and feel starngelt about. Without feeling ashamed, we can look at other women’s genitals and make comparisons and see that there is an endless variety to the shape and size. I also think it is effective to see it in a white clean minimized appearance without skin tone or hair to distract. Very interesting!
