Yvonne, of Ambleside, Purfleet, has an aversion to the metal in coins and the dye in notes. She’s also has a bad reaction to spices, magnesium, copper, cooking spices and the dye in some jeans.

The condition has got so bad for single mum Yvonne that she has to use her debit card eveywhere she goes. She can’t even put on plastic gloves to hold her cash because she’s allergic to latex too.

She said: "I’m a vegan now, I’m allergic to so many things I have to really watch what I eat. The plus side is I’m very healthy. The doctor recently told me I had the health of a 15-year-old."

Yvonne, who has a seven-year-old daughter Cheryish, used to come out on terrible rashes and swellings before her problem with money was diagnosed.

"I couldn’t pin down what was causing the rash. It was making my life a misery," she said.

“If I had a bad reaction, I could be off work for weeks, waiting for the swelling to do down.”

Eventually after a series of tests her allergies were flagged up by medics.

"It’s a lot better these days because pretty much everywhere takes plastic cards.

"Before when I had to handle money, my hands would swell right up whenever I touched coins or notes," she said.

"I’ve been told its incurable and as its’s so rare I’m not over hopeful there will be a cure, but I’m learning to live with it."
