Partey, who denies the charges, was first arrested in July 2022. Although his name was not disclosed at the time, and continues to play for Arsenal while the investigation is ongoing.

The 32-year-old’s contract with Arsenal expired on June 30 and Partey was charged four days later.

In a statement to Sky Sports, Arsenal said: “The player’s contract expires on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on this matter.”

Arteta addressed the situation for the first time since Partey was charged during the pre-season tour of Singapore.

“The club has made a very clear statement,” Arteta said. “There are a lot of very complex legal issues, so I can’t comment on them.”

Asked if he felt confident and comfortable that the club had followed the correct procedures, Arteta replied: “100 per cent.”

Partey’s charges are two counts of rape involving one woman. Three counts of rape involving a second woman and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman.

Partey is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on August 5.
